Plants, Plants, Plants

We had a really cool science lesson today! We learned about all the parts of a plant, and then saw it in action with celery, water and food colour.  We saw how the veins in the stem of the celery soaked up the water and brought it all the way up to the leaves.  When we took the celery apart we could see the veins and the colour!

You can learn more about the parts of a plant by playing this game: http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/9_10/life_cycles.shtml

Here you can see if you have what it takes to make a plant grow:

DIY: Procedural Writings Online

Today we talked about procedural writings and learned about d.i.y. which stands for do it yourself.  Here are some great examples of  'diy' writing! I hope these links will inspire your writing ideas, and you might even find something you'd like to make yourself (with help from Mom or Dad).

Groundhogs Day

Yesterday was Groundhogs Day, and we learned all kinds of facts about groundhogs. Did you know groundhogs have very strong legs for digging and climbing? Or that they have two layers of fur? We also came up with a list of great questions like: How do groundhogs use their whiskers? Are groundhogs really afraid of their shadow? When did groundhog day start?

Today in math we had a quiz on 2 and 3 digit addition.  They will go home to be signed early next week.  Keep practicing your basic facts up to 18 to help make adding bigger numbers a whiz!

In Language Arts we are finishing up two pieces of writing.  A special writing for Chinese New Year, and a procedural writing of their own choice.

Happy Weekend!

New Science Unit

Today we learned what our next science unit is going to be: Plants! We are so excited about this unit because we will learn great facts about plants, and even get to grow our own plant. Do you have plants at home? It would be a great time to talk about them with your student!
